Anyone concerned about the climate crisis, about environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, needs to take up the cause of disarmament with equal passion, as these are interconnected issues. (Melissa Parke, Executive Director of ICAN International, 2023)
As part of this year’s National Sustainability Festival, ICAN Australia will be joined by experts from Youngsolwara, The Australia Institute, and Doctors for the Environment Australia to discuss the twin existential threats of nuclear weapons and climate change, and what needs to happen to avert catastrophe.
The detonation of even a small number of nuclear weapons would cause devastating environmental effects, leading to global climate disruption, famines, nuclear winter, and widespread suffering. Furthermore, the production and testing of nuclear weapons have significant environmental impacts, including radioactive contamination and habitat destruction.
ICAN Australia is working to promote adherence to and full implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). We believe that while nuclear weapons are held and produced by nations across the world, catastrophic danger remains for all of us and our climate.
