In 2010 Beyond Zero Emissions published a report that said Australia could transition to 100% renewable energy in 10 years at a cost of just $8/week per household. South Australian, Margaret Hender imagined a place where anyone could send their contributions (of any amount) to collectively pay for practical renewable energy projects that reduce carbon emissions immediately. So she founded the Citizens Own Renewable Energy Network Australia (CORENA) to do just that!
But even better than that, she decided that those contributions could be magnified through the power of a revolving energy fund. CORENA offers zero interest loans to not for profits and community for practical climate projects. The resultant savings on operating costs cover the loan repayments back into our revolving fund. In this way donated funds are used over and over again in subsequent projects. Since then CORENA has supported 54 projects across Australia with over $1.3 million dollars in loans and a $100 donation to our first project has grown to over $450. Our latest project with Mansfield Autism State-wide Services in Victoria needs your help. Come along to find out all about it.
