Kanchana Weerakoon is a well-known environmental conservationist and experienced trainer in sustainable living and zero-waste lifestyles. She will be conducting a two-part workshop that would benefit participants interested in learning more about sustainable living and reducing waste in their daily lives.
Part 1:
Kanchana will take participants through the 10 Rs of sustainable living – Reject, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Replace, Recycle, Rethink, Remember, Repeat. She will speak about how she has practised a zero-waste lifestyle for the past 23 years, suggest accessible ways participants can start or take the next steps towards sustainable living, and answer any questions.
Part 2:
The participants will learn how to convert their non-biodegradables into sustainable building blocks by compacting plastic bottles with non-biodegradable waste. These eco-bricks are currently the only way to recycle soft plastics in Australia and take them out of circulation.
IMPORTANT: what you need:
– A 600ml plastic bottle,
– A total of about 30 items, including a mix of clean and dry soft plastics such as chip packets, cheese wrapping, coffee packs, and a few thin bags, basically all that used to be taken by Red Cycle,
– A wooden spoon with a long round handle for stuffing the bottles.
